Honey Facts
Honeybee History
Egyptians were the first known civilization to harvest honey from honeybees. It is estimated that Egyptians first started harvesting honey in 7,000 BCE and began domesticating honeybees in 2,600 BCE. Honeybees are native to Asia, Africa, and Europe, and are NOT native to North America. They were brought to North America in the 17th century by Europeans.
Inside a Honeybee Hive
A honeybee hive consists of 95% female worker bees, 5% drones (male bees), and one queen bee. Female worker bees voluntarily give up their reproduction abilities in order to serve the queen bee, who is in charge of laying all eggs in the hive. A queen bee will go on one mating flight per year in the spring to fertilize her eggs. The fertilized eggs she creates during that flight will stay in her all year, and she will lay them as needed for the hive.
Is it a bee?
Wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets are not bees. These predators eat other insects and are especially aggressive stingers. Bees include honeybees, carpenter bees, and bumble bees who are vegetarians and have a docile nature. Bees have evolved to mimic their appearance to wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets to trick their predators into believing they are just as dangerous. This mimicry even tricks most humans- are you one of them?
